The expressions on the faces of many Ghanaians after news reached airwaves of Ghana losing a bout in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics was fascinating as it justified the support being meted from home.
Following the progress of the Black Bombers on their journey through Inawashiro to Tokyo and their preparations prior to the start of the Olympics got Ghanaians in high hopes that the Black Bombers will all reach the medal zone. Luck was on the side of Samuel Takyi and Shakul Bastie who drew bye in their preliminary fight.
Sulemanu Tetteh, the skipper of the Bombers opened with a ferocious comeback to win his bout as did Samuel ‘Ring Warrior’ Takyi who entered the ring all explosive to record a 5-0 win on the score cards of all five judges.
The onus was on Shakul Samed Bastie who was representing Ghana in the light heavyweight division at the Olympics. His bout against Bayram Malkan was short as the Turkish dropped Samed in the second round of the three rounds to read a TKO win over the Ghanaian.
It was overly a sad news for the qualified Bombers and entire technical team as the captain and ‘Ring Warrior’ have taken upon themselves to redeem the dented image in their quest for laurels.
In an interview with Sulemanu Tetteh and Samuel Takyie, the two stated, “We were not expecting this because our brother is a hard and strong fighter, he lost his foot and his mistake cost us greatly. I am the captain and I have now added his burden to my own. I will fight extra hard and make him proud because we came here to all win and now that his battle has ended, I will continue for him.”
Samuel ‘Ring Warrior’ Takyi added, “I was sad when our brother walked out of the ring with a lose because we all wanted to get to the podium, but as our captain has said, we are angry now and we will fight till we win, and we will all smile again.”
