Today In History: DK Poison Claims Ghana’s First World Title

On 20th September 1975, David Kotei Poison became the first Ghanaian to win a world title.

He won the WBC featherweight title by a split decision victory over Ruben Olivares at the forum in Inglewood, California.

The Ghanaian defended the belt three times – he defeated David Sotelo, Flipper Uehara, and Shig Fukuyama.

Before unfortunately, he lost his belt to Danny Lopez via a unanimous decision on November 6, 1976, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

After achieving that feat, the likes of Azumah Nelson, Nana Yaw Konadu, Ike Quartey, Alfred Kotey, Joseph Agbeko, Joshua Clottey and Isaac Dogboe have all won World titles for Ghana.
