The lightweight division is indeed proving once again to be one of the hottest divisions in the world of boxing. It is therefore very important to commend and applaud whoever holds more than one world title in the 135lbs division. Respect to Teofimo Lopez and Lomachenko for attaining this feat in this era.
Former IBF world champion Richard Commey after losing his title to Teofimo Lopez has launched his come back to claim his status again as a world champion with his eyes focused on every title holder in the lightweight division.
After his come back fight announcement against Jackson Marinez who suffered a round 6 TKO in the hands of the former world champion, Richard Commey has been calling on the real prospects and title holders to make a move, but to no avail. After calling on Luke Campbell who decided not to respond, Commey has recently been calling Devin Haney who holds the WBC world title.
In a recent tweet from Haney, he claim he’s the most avoided fighter even after Commey had made the call. With Team Commey eager to prove their readiness to face the WBC champion, Commey revealed that “…my people have written to the @WBCBoxing to sanction the fight, you can run but you can’t hide!!!!!..”
It therefore surprised me when some folks took to the media that Lomachenko will fight Richard Commey on December 11, simply because Loma twitted “December 11” yesterday. I was even more surprised for Devin Haney to believe this information. Richard Commey isn’t a coward to be calling out a fight with a title holder and at the same time coming into agreement to fight another guy. Nevertheless, Commey isn’t afraid to fight any 135-pound pugilist who is ready, he made his intensions clear after his fight with Marinez, to face the title holders.
Devin Haney, who believed the fabrications responded on Twitter “@RichardCommey what was the point? 🤔” after seeing a tweet with some weird poster of the said untrue fight.
Haney should not find an excuse to run AGAIN from Commey’s challenge call.
To clear the air, the three most important people with regards to the matchup have clarified on this matter; Lou Dibella (Commey’s promoter), Michael Amoo-Bediako Snr (Commey’s manager) and Richard Commey HIMSELF.
Lou Dibella responded “… We haven’t received an offer [from Lomachenko], forget about a deal! @RichardCommey fears no one and is prepared to fight any big fight at 135. We are waiting for talks to progress. Bring on whoever if the deal is fair. #Boxing”
The next response came from his manager, Mr Amoo “100% @RichardCommey fights anyone at 135lbs and as for @Realdevinhaney saying he’s the most avoided fighter in the division, I think not. @MikeCoppinger is correct no official offers have been made but but there is talk, let’s see what happens in the coming weeks.”
And finally, the boxer in question, Richard Oblitey Commey said in response to Devin Haney, “This is news to me, I’ve seen no contract and had no offer so make me one!!!”
ON LOMACHENKO’S TWEET
Vasiliy Lomachenko is just on the same mission as Richard Commey. After losing his WBA and WBO titles to Teofimo Lopez in October last year, Loma was immediately ready for a rematch which Lopez refused him. He therefore had to make a comeback when he brutally KOed Nakatani to make an announcement.
It is understood that Teofimo Lopez’s camp has agreed with Bob Arum for a rematch to be granted Lomachenko before the year ends.Meanwhile, Thriller, who won the bid to promote the Lopez vs Kambosos unification bout has kept postponing the fight date after Lopez tested posted for COVID, but ready and cleared now to fight. The date after Lopez recovered was first fixed on August 5, then to September 11 and has currently settled on mid-October in Australia.
This will definitely frustrate Vasily Lomachenko who is eager for the rematch. Lopez and his team isn’t happy either as they’ve mounted pressure on IBF to take action [visit bit.ly/3C2e6bu for more about Lopez and the Thriller saga].
Lomachenko could be sending a message to team Lopez, ready to face winner of Lopez vs Kambosos [which could happen in September] amidst pressure on the October date in Australia as proposed by Thriller. Lomachenko simply wants boxing fans to know he’s ready to rumble on December 11.
Take note, both Lomachenko and Richard Commey want the world title(s), and if the holders aren’t available, they could settle to rumble together in the square ring.I am of the opinion that, neither teams should agree to fight if a clear line is not drawn for one of the title holders to be MANDATED to fight winner of Commey vs Lomachenko.
