Ghana’s Maxwell Awuku (44-3-1, 30 KOs) has arrived safely in Cancun in Mexico ahead of this Saturday’s fight against WBC World super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt (32-1, 28 KOs).
Awuku and his trainer Adama Addy arrived in Cancun on Tuesday afternoon after leaving Ghana last Monday.
Ahead of the fight, the Ghanaian is confident of a win over the champion.
“The Mexicans believe that they will take me by surprise and I am not prepared, they have made a big mistake, I will spoil the party before for their people, I will knock out their champion and then I will go to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Cancun,” Awuku said.
He added: “I’m not just a puncher. I’m a natural and a quick counter-puncher. We Africans are brave, with a lot of professional shame. To fight for the title of the world and the WBC belt is a unique opportunity that will change my life and my family and I will not waste it. I want to thanks everyone who intervened for me to be in Mexico to fulfill a dream,” said Awuku.
Awuku is the third opponent to jump in to this fight. Initially, Berchelt was scheduled to face former world champion Cristian Mijares, but the contest fell apart because Mijares’ team was not satisfied with terms of the television deal.
