Sports Writers Association of Ghana bestowed upon the ‘royal storm’ Dogboe the highest accolade as the sports personality of the year 2017 at the just ended 43rd edition of the awards which was held last night the 4th of May 2018 at the plash International Conference Centre in Accra-Ghana.
In an event which was well attended, the longest running awards ceremony lasted a little over 4 hours.
After winning the boxer of the year, the ‘royal storm’ succeeded Anthony Baffour as the SWAG sports personality of the year 2017.
Early this year Dogboe floored his Mexican opponent Cesar Juarez via a technical knockout in Accra-Ghana at the Bukom Boxing Arena to set himself up for the world title against Jesse Magdaleno and just last week settled the tough but little business of beating the Mexican -American in Philadelphia, United States.
After an early knockdown in the first round, the now Ghana’s youngest world champion recovered very well to halt the fight via a TKO in the 11th round.
The awards was graced with a lot of excitement, pump and pageantry and ace musician Kwabena Kwabena after initial setback thrilled the fans with some soothing melodies with both old and new songs.
There were some very notable personalities on the night including the special guest and the Chief of Dormaaman Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II who delivered his keynote address and commended the current sports minister and Isaac Dogboe.
Then finally the moment came and Isaac the ‘royal storm’ was awarded the 43rd SWAG sports personality of the year amidst the excitement and funfare.
“I thank the almighty God for how far he has brought me, and team Dogboe, and to you Ghanaian’s, it was a collective effort from all those who helped me get this far. I can’t mention all the names but thank you.” The newly crowned WBO world super featherweight champion retorted.
