Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) President, Mr George Lamptey was part of the 137 member heads that casted their votes to elect Gafur Rahimov as the new head of International Boxing Association (AIBA).

Uzbekistani businessman Gafur Rahimov secured 86 votes majority from the 137 member associations to be elected the head of International Boxing Association (AIBA), in a congress which was held in Moscow the capital of Russia.

The Ghana Boxing Federation earlier staged a special boxing competition at the DG Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium to scout talented boxers into the national pugilism team the Black Bombers.

The federation has been busy with a host of activities including the organisation of the “fist of fury” in partnership with the Ghana Boxing Authority and other stakeholders with lawyer Moses Foh Amoaning as the consultant.

History has it that Pugilism was first discovered 3,000 BC in Madieval Egypt in Africa where civilisation was first discovered.

Indeed, boxing has continuously evolved and was first accepted as an Olympic sport in 688 BC with Onomastos the first world champion.

The collapsed of (FIBA) la Fédération Internationale de Boxe Amateur after the second world came AIBA; l’Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur.

Kudos to the English and the French for setting the foundation because AIBA has come to stay.

A lot is expected of the new AIBA head Gafur Rahimov in his reign as he made a brief acceptance speech after being elected.

“Today has been a great day for AIBA and it represents an important step forward for boxing. I am honored to have been elected as the President of AIBA and I want to thank the AIBA family for their trust and for allowing me to continue leading this great organization. I am confident that, together with my new AIBA Executive Committee members, the AIBA staff and the national federations, we will be able to continue on the progress made in bringing boxing into a brand new era” credit (AIBA.org)
