The countdown to the most anticipated bout slated for Ghana’s Independence Day is still on as former Ghana National lightweight champion, former ABU and Commonwealth lightweight champion George ‘Red Tiger’ is set to rumble with the UBO super lightweight champion Robert ‘The Stopper’ Quaye at the Bukom Boxing Arena, Accra, Ghana.
With less than a month to the slated bout dubbed, “Rumble to Freedom”, our Chief Managing Editor, Samuel Ofosuhene had a conversation with the Manager of Robert Quaye, Dr. Adae Opoku Amoako who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ACE Power Promotions and also a medical doctor in the United States. Mr. Ofosuhene quizzed him on his expectations from his protege, who he earnestly believes will emerge victorious. They talked future promotional plans as far as his syndicate ACE Power Promotions is concerned. Enjoy the convo
Que: What are the chances of your boxer Robert Quaye against a much experienced and tougher opponent though older in George Ashie?
Ans: It is my believe that Robert Quaye is going to carry the day. Yes, George Ashie has the experience but with experience also comes the age factor. He’s been in the game for a while now, and at 37 I don’t believe he’s got what it takes to stop a much younger “Stopper”. Let’s not forget with 20-0, Robert also got the experience.
Que: What was the motivation in accepting this fight ?
There were several reasons for taking this fight but before I expand on it, they all fall under the umbrella of progress.
Where Robert is in his career, getting noticed and doing more international titles is paramount. He’s won all that he can locally and on the African stage he’s won the WBO in his weight category. The IBF in Africa is just the natural progression. On the same theme of progression, myself and ACE Power Promotions want to see competitive fights in Ghana. Lots of people have been asking for this bout but it’s been shelved for years and we want to change that. In fact it’s my wish that all number 1s and 2s fight each other for the national titles and other African ones. Again in terms of progress, I think Ghanaian boxing fans deserve to watch competitive fights again. It was a no brainer for myself and my team to accept this challenge, for Robert, Ghana Boxing, and patrons of Ghana boxing in general.
Que: Biases aside who is your money on?
Ans: Bias aside, I put my money on Robert Quaye for all the reasons I have provided regarding his chances.
Que: When is your next promotions
Ans: We were slated to promote an event on March 5th but the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has written to us that we are unable to do so now because of the Professional Boxing League. As you know, promotions of a boxing show, involves several third parties and individuals. Our company prioritizes our dignity and trust in the industry, and we can’t compromise it with shifting of dates and other things involving our stakeholders. Situations like this and several uncertainties in Ghana boxing right now leaves us as a company to monitor things before we make moves. These things have really put our plans for the year in jeopardy, so we will continue to monitor.
The bout is promoted by Alex Ntiamoah Boakye’s Box Office Sports Promotions and partnered by Probellum.
Don’t forget that the IBF Continental Africa Junior Welterweight will be at stake come fight night.
