Former WBA world welterweight champion, Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey, has predicted that newly crowned WBO World super bantamweight champion Isaac Dogboe can defend his belt for seven years.
Two weeks ago in Philadelphia, Dogboe shocked the world by stopping then champion Jessie Magdaleno in round 11 to win the belt.
The 23 year-old hard-hitter thus becomes Ghana’s eighth world champion and the youngest world champion to come from Ghana.
And Quartey commenting on Dogboe’s triumph said, the former Olympian has the needed skills to keep his belt for seven years.
“For me, I want Dogboe to keep the title for a long time,” Quartey told Dornu’s Corner.
“With him at 23, I think he can keep the title for seven years because of the way he fight. He fights like he doesn’t fear anyone.”
The retired boxer predicted a year ago that Dogboe was a world title prospect.
“I said it over a year ago that he’s the only prospect we have in Ghana now and he has made it,” Quartey recounted.
Quartey shot to fame in 1994 when he dethroned Crisanto Espana (via TKO in round 11) to win the WBA world welterweight strap. The fight came off at the Palais des Sports Marcel-Cerdan, Levallois in France.
