In a fight where David Haye needed to bring his mojo on it turned out the contrary as his career looks all but seemingly in tatters in the very feverish atmosphere at the 02 Arena.
For a fight which was billed as ‘revenge or repeat’ and with most pundits going for Haye, he sure did little to savage his decorated 16 year career as he was outsmarted by his old nemesis every step on the way.
He looked stamina suspect and there were times that you felt the fight was not going to travel the full length of the scheduled twelve (12) rounds.
“Tony boxed a great fight, He did some really clever stuff in there. He boxed good, and I didn’t it’s that simple. The defeated former two-weight division champion stated.
But truth be told, Tony Bellew was at his best as he dropped Haye surprisingly thrice before the referee decided to halt the fight in the fifth round, in two (2) minutes 14 seconds.
“I lost my brother-in-law in August – his dad’s here tonight, and I swear he was with me too. Ashley, I love you, mate. He’s been on my mind the whole time, I miss him so much. I’m broke, la. I’m just broke.”
“David Haye is an amazing fighter, we just got into a slugfest. Age is a factor with his style. He goes down as a better fighter than me. But I won, against all the odds. I was willing to be finished off in this ring tonight, I’m struggling bad but I’ve done it, and that’s all that matters.” Tony told the press.
David Haye looked unfit and lacked quick decision making and Tony exploited those flaws with his sharpness, speedy and hooks.
On a few times that he resorted to counter punching, it really took a toll on David Haye.
Though the former WBA champion, Haye never talked about retirement with his age at 38, it’s pretty obvious that he sure must be considering it.
