Azumah Nelson To Attend 56th WBC Convention In Kiev

Ghana’s greatest and most famous boxer “Professor” Azumah Nelson, confirms he’ll attend the WBC’s 56th annual Convention.

From September 30 to October 7, the boxing family will meet in the beautiful city of Kiev, to celebrate Boxing’s largest and most spectacular annual celebration.

Azumah Nelson was born on September 19, 1958, in Accra, Ghana. He debuted professionally at 19 years of age, earning recognition as a tremendous prospect.

In July 21, 1982, he audaciously challenged formidable WBC featherweight champion Salvador Sánchez Narváez. A spectacular risk, as it was only Azumah’s 14th fight.

The fierce battle , at Madison Square Garden in New York, was a classic. Salvador TKO’d Azumah in the final round.

Two years later, the older and wiser Azumah, challenged the then champion Wilfredo Gómez. The fight was in San Juan de Puerto Rico. Azumah won via KO in eleven rounds.

Azumah Nelson successfully defended his crown 10 times. One of the most remembered fights was when he faced Gabriel Ruelas who he defeated at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City in the historic card “Poker de Ases”, on February 20, 1993.

“Professor” Azumah fought his last competitive bout on July 11, 1988 in San Antonio Texas against “Jesse” James Leija, with whom he fought four times. On that final occasion he lost by unanimous decision. The last time Azumah donned the gloves was in 2008 against Jeff Fenech.
