Many people along the shores of Ghana and around the enclaved of Bukom engage in boxing as their hobby and is the current sport that has taken many of its youth off the streets.
Dr. Ofori Asare, the current coach of the national boxing team in his numerous years of boxing and coaching loved to give back to society as he had to fight his way to glory. He established Wisdom Boxing Gym with the aim of giving back to the society and to create an opening for individuals who want to learn boxing either for a career or to keep fit.
Today at the Independence Square of Ghana, Wisdom Boxing Gym was officially inaugurated and partnered with Kempol Textile.
Following the success of Coach Dr. Ofori Asare at the just ended Tokyo Olympics after helping his team win a bronze medal for Ghana, Dr. Asare has become one of the household names alongside Samuel Takyi who was under his tutelage.
Wisdom Boxing Gym is the most active boxing club within the Greater Accra Region in Ghana, West Africa. The club has been in existence since 1993 and has discovered and prepared several boxers who have eventually become National, African, Commonwealth and World Champion contenders. The club has had 5 representatives at the Olympics. Boxers from Wisdom boxing Gym have consistently been a part of the Ghanaian team for 4 consecutive Olympic Games; 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. Their boxer Abdul Wahid Omar was the sole medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth games.
Wisdom Boxing Gym was founded by Coach Ofori Asare, the only 3-star rated AIBA-certified instructor in West Africa, who also doubles as the Coach for the Ghana National Boxing Team, the Black Bombers. They have also nurtured boxers who have become popular boxing figures in Ghana including Bastie Samir, Issah Samir, Patrick Allotey, and Sulemanu Tetteh.
During the inauguration, KEMPOL TEXTILES during their speech said,
“Boxing, sadly classified as a ‘lesser known sport’ or ‘lesser patronized sport’ has earned Ghana more than half of her Olympic medals. Few weeks ago, Ghana’s only medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was earned in Boxing. Little investments have been made in this sport, despite its far-reaching potential to earn more accolades for the nation. We can make mention of boxing legends like Azumah Nelson, Ike ‘Bazuka’ Quartey, D. K. Poison and many others who through their agility, strength and stamina in the ring brought glory and honour to our beloved country.
“The work of Wisdom Boxing Gym and Coach Ofori Asare promises to entrench boxing as a preferred sport for many young Ghanaians. This quest to develop young talents to build a career for themselves in their most preferred sporting activity is one worth emulating and supporting. Following the works of Coach Ofori Asare and his team at the gym for some time, we have come to conclusion that, supporting these young talents at the gym to achieve their dreams is a shared responsibility we are ready to partake in.”
