His desire and conviction to win the world title goes a notch higher than self fulfilment, Richard Commey is very determined to get his two hands on the world title for mother Ghana in order to get more funding and sponsorship for the sport.

Speaking in an interview with fighttalk, the James town native was of the firm conviction that winning the world title is  going to do a lot of good for the land of his birth.

” boxing is massive in Ghana and gets none or very little support. Winning a world title will be great for the country and will help to bring awareness to attract more funding and sponsorship into the sport back home.” Commey told the interviewer.

Commey reiterated his ultimate aim of winning the world title this year

“My aim is to be the lightweight champion of the world.”

He further disclosed his future ambitions after winning the world title

“Then, unify and move up. I believe I can do this but, I have to focus.” Commey added.

The United States based Ghanaian pugilist touched on the seemingly obvious neglect for the sport in Ghana

“Right now, most or nearly all of the money goes into football which I do not believe is fair as football gets enough money. Commey said.

He revealed circumstances which bedeviled his preparations heading into the Robert Easter Easter Junior’s fight two years ago.

“It was very emotional as things didn’t go according to plan in the run up to the fight.

I didn’t arrive in the States in the time I needed, in order to complete my training.”

But never minced words on his inner-most affirmation that he won the bout

Yes, I truly believe I won the fight. To get a split decision against an American – in America – tells you who really won the fight and I believe I did.” Commey stated confidently.

Remember, the Ghanaian is now in the same GYM with the likes of Sadam Ali who just defeated Miguel Cotto, Danny Jacobs and Curtis stevens.

After ending the undefeatedness of Alex Alejandro ‘El Charro’ Luna early this year, his credentials now stands, 26 fights with 24 victories and 23 by way of knockouts.

His back to back defeats came via some controversial circumstances to both Shafikov and the current  champion Robert Easter Junior.

The battle is set for a second  showdown between Richard Commey and Easter Junior and it’s pretty obvious that the once most avoided fighter is still being avoided by the champion (Robert Easter Junior).
