VIRGIL ORTIZ DOMINATES GHANA’S FREDERICK LAWSON; SEES HIM OFF IN ROUND ONE.
Ghana’s Frederick Lawson was unable to stay “vigil” on Ortiz last Saturday night leaving referee Tony Weeks no choice but to “rescue” the Chicago based boxer from the avalanche of power shots thrown his way by the undefeated Mexican American boxer.
Make no mistake, Vergil Ortiz is known for his punching power since his Junior Olympic and amateur days hence it comes as no surprise that after 20 professional pugilist encounters in just 70 rounds of career boxing, he still commands a knockout to win percentage of 100%.
For some lovers of the pugilist action, the middle man in the person of experienced Tony Weeks stopped the fight perhaps 15 seconds early than he should according to the rules, but with Lawson’s track record, perhaps it was a stitch in time. This is a boxer(Lawson) who had a broken jaw not too long ago.
Per all the punches that the ‘General”- Okunka was eating, the Ghanaian native was smartly protecting his jaw more than any part of his body. Forcing Tony Weeks to do the needful by stopping the fight.
let’s sample some of the comments against the early stoppage;
Harry says the “Stoppage was laughable he was just covering up lmfao”
Mike Nasir seems to have to agree
“He had his hands/guard up – if needed to go down, he could have/would have taken a knee. Horrible stoppage that early in the fight.”
“Tony Weeks need to take weeks off and just be Tony.” That was Kese Dzyne mischievously playing with words in such a witty manner.
“You can tell Ortiz was the marquee fighter in that rushed stoppage. This way, he maintains a glossy KO record.” David Cole twitted.
In fact, some were calling for an early retirement of referee Tony Weeks “Tony Weeks needs to retire.” There were a lot of unpalatable adjectives like garbage, horrible, and what have you.
What remain undeniable, is the fact that Frederick Lawson looked like he did not want this fight, starting from the presscons to the weigh-in and the fight itself.
In summary ,this is another bad defeat inflicted on yet another Ghanaian boxer. What a way to begin the year 2024?
