Ghanaian welterweight boxer and world title hopeful, Ebenezer Daitey Amedor, has presented a Toyota Corolla LE saloon car to his trainer, Benjamin Tetteh, for his role in grooming him to his current status in the sport.
Amedor, 27, bought a pre-owned Toyota which was presented to his former trainer at his Palmspring Boxing Gym at Banana Inn in Accra last Monday.
Tetteh, who has 11 wins in 13 fights, relocated to the UK last year to work his way towards a world title.
He told the Daily Graphic that his Ghanaian trainer made a profound impact on his life and helped in honing his skills in the sport. The car, he added, was his way of showing gratitude to his trainer for his tremendous help over the years.
“I have come to the UK to further improve my art, get good bouts to push me up towards a world title shot,” UK-based Amedor said.
He advised boxers to honour their trainers and also support them financially and in kind so that they might receive genuine blessings from their coaches.
“Some boxers abandon their coaches as soon as they reach the top, others don’t regard their coaches and never supports them. I want to break that practice where coaches are always overlooked when a boxer becomes a world champion or an African champion,” he asserted.
Tetteh, for his part, thanked Daitey for his kind gesture and blessed him to be a world champion within the shortest possible time.
“I have been in the business for 13 years and I can confidently say this is the first time since being a member of the Boxing CoachesAssociation that a boxer has made such a bold move and made such a generous offer,” he stated.
The 58-year-old trainer expressed the hope that other boxers he had trained and mentored, including Michael ‘One Bullet’ Ansah, Wonder Tackie, Emmanuel Sackey, Odartei Lamptey and Michael Darko, would be inspired by Amedor’s gesture.
