THIRD AFRICAN BOXER PUNCHES HER WAY TO QUARTER-FINALS

Nigeria’s African Games middleweight champion Patricia Mbata outpointed Brazil’s Viviane Pereira 4-1 to advance to Sunday’s quarter-finals of the ongoing qualifiers for Paris Olympics in Bangkok, Thailand.

She just needs to win her quarter-final to book a ticket to Paris because the middleweight class has been allocated four quotas in the Bangkok qualifiers.

Mbata joins three other boxers from Africa who have made it to the last eight. They are two Cape Verdeans, Africa welterweight champion Ivanusa Moreira and flyweight David Pina, and DR Congo’s Mandela Cup welterweight champion Brigitte Mbabi who fights Moreira in the quarter-finals on Sunday in an all-African bout that has already given Africa the 19th qualifier even before they take to the ring.
