Theo Allotey, Patrick Chinyemba and all the would-be flyweight medallists are in action
🇬🇭 African Games Boxing Tournament in Accra, Ghana, March 15-22
CHINYEMBA, ALLOTEY SEMIS BREWING IN FLYWEIGHT FIRE
Africa champ Kulenguka all set for a rematch with Simnikiwe
An intriguing semi-final encounter is brewing between Zambia’s Paris-bound Patrick Chinyemba (pictured right in blue attire) and Ghana’s glamour boy Theo Allotey both of whom are in action in today’s seemingly exciting flyweight quarter-final bouts with the possibility of Chinyemba squaring it out with defending African Games flyweight champion Botswana’s Rajab Otukile Mahomed in the finals.
It’s the second day of boxing in the African Games at Bukom Arena in Accra with the highlights at flyweight, lightweight and light-middleweight.
All the would-be flyweight medallists are in action in the quarter-finals.
Zambia’s showboating Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Patrick Chinyemba and Africa champion in 2022 trades leather with Ethiopia’s Wibshet Dawit, Ghana’s hot medal prospect Theo Allotey meets Egypt’s Amr El Tafahny, Botswana’s defending African Games flyweight champion Rajab Otukile Mahomed squares it out with Valerie Fabrice of Mauritius and DR Congo’s Bakora Kalongo fights Africa gold medallist Lusizi Lubabalo from South Africa.
Chinyemba is favoured to get rid of Wibshet with ease and Allotey, who’ll enjoy massive home support, will eliminate Tafahny for an explosive semi-final encounter with Chinyemba who’ll boot out the Ghanaian to romp to the finals.
On the other side of the corner, Otukile has an edge over Valerie with Lubabalo favoured to eliminate Kalongo for a semi-final bout with Otukile. The latter is likely to thump his close neighbour Lubabalo for a mouth-watering final showdown with Chinyemba barring unforeseen circumstances.
South Africa’s Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Simnikiwe Bongco has a score to settle with DR Congo’s Africa light-middleweight champion Mbiya Kulenguka of DR Congo who defeated Bongco in their opening fight in last year’s Africa Championships in Yaounde. Zambia’s Commonwealth Games silver medallist Stephen Zimva is also in the mix facing off against Mali’s Mahamadou Goita and Morocco’s 2022 Africa champion Hamza El Barbari battling it out with Nigeria’s Ibrahim Yakubu in some of the other light-middleweight bouts on the card.
Africa gold and silver middleweight medallist David Tshama of DR Congo has a date with Morocco’s Yassine Elouarz, Tanzania’s welterweight Abdallah Mfaume meets Zambia’s Gerald Kabinda while female boxers Ghana’s Sarah Apew and Kenya’s Amina Martha slug it out at bantamweight.
There is some good boxing at lightweight in which Ghana’s Commonwealth Games silver medallist Joseph Commey meets Jeroson Barkin of Liberia and South Africa’s stubborn Sanele Sogcwayi fights Tunisia’s Saieffeddine Ayari.
