In a typical brawling end to end action, Welterweight king Errol Spence threw 745 punches to Porter’s 744 to secure the WBC welterweight title to his IBF strap with a thrilling split-decision victory over the veteran Shawn Porter earlier this morning at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, California, USA.
The self styled Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence landed 221 of his punches, 44% of his power punches — 49 more than Porter to that of Shawn Porter’s 25.7% according to the CompuBox stats.
But the new WBC Welterweight champion was pretty impressed with his output in one of the most evenly matched match-ups on the night as he improved his unbeaten record to (26-0,21 KOs).
“Porter was throwing a lot,” Spence said. “I wanted to show I was the bigger and stronger welterweight.”
“This is a lifetime dream,” Spence said. “It shows hard work pays off. Shawn Porter is a rough and awkward fighter. I didn’t get off what I wanted to. He’s a true champion. He made it tough … (but) all my punches have bad intentions.” He revealed.
Truth be told, Shawn Porter (30-3-1), did not disappoint with the odds so much against him prior to the fight. But for his punch landing abilities, he really could have upset the odds.
“He’s a strong kid,” Porter said. “We both came in to do the job. I think I had a little more than what he expected, but he handled it. Congratulations to him and his team. We’re proud of what we did.”
The veteran Porter, a perfect definition of a brawler forced Errol Spence into uncomfortable situations in nearly every round of their entertaining battle much to the amazed spectators. But even Spence in his solo moment must admit.
