Teofimo Lopez ‘showed tremendous love, and that’s how it’s supposed to be’ – Richard Commey
Current unified undefeated lightweight king Teofimo Lopez Jr. showed love towards Ghana’s pride Richard Commey when he visited his camp to offer support of encouragement ahead of his encounter with Jackson Marinez yesterday.
After a slow start, Commey came back stronger in the second half of hostilities and annihilated his Dominican Republic opposition in the sixth round to register a claim to his popular ‘redemption’ rhetoric and on course to become a two-time world champion. Referee Kenny Bayless had no choice but the end the fight.
“When I first started, I started very slow because I’ve been away for more than a year, so I had to take my time a little bit just to get my rhythm. My corner was telling me to do something. They saw that punch that took him down.” The self styled Azonto Commey said.
“After our fight, I saw (Teofimo Lopez) in the lobby and we chatted and hugged. He always liked me, and it’s pure love. For him to come down to my corner, it was motivating. It showed tremendous love, and that’s how it’s supposed to be. We gotta love each other, regardless of where you’re from or who you are. I appreciated (his support).” The Ghanaian appreciated his old nemesis with such pure enduring class.
Commey now improves his record to (30-3, 27 KOs). In truth, the fight was very close in the early exchanges but the Jamestown native was simply relentless and finally landed a jab followed by two powerful rights that sent Marinez into the ropes and down to the mat with about 40 seconds left in the sixth round.
By this resounding victory, the 33 years old annouces his presence in the the hotly contested lightweight division
