Mohammed Amin Lamptey writes:

Wasiru Mohammed who made his professional debut in April 2017 with a knockout victory to set the tone for a very much expectations of his ambition to become a world beater, prematurely hanged his gloves and fighting shoes to the surprise of many especially his handlers and fans.

Mohammed at a point was seen by many boxing pandits as a potential world title prospect with an impressive official record of 12 fights,12 wins, no defeat, with 11 of the wins came by way of knockouts.

The legendary Professor Azumah Nelson gave him the nickname Gyata Bi (Son of the Lion) to reflect his aggressive fighting style, unwavering determination and the desire to dominate his opponents. This nick name infused so much sense of urgency and accuracy in the boxer.

With this blessing from Azumah Nelson (former world champion) Wasiru Mohammed fueled his fighting spirit with seven wins within one year, including six knockouts and as a result, he received his first title fight in May, 2018 and scored a first-round knockout victory over Kamarudeen Boyefio for the vacant Ghana Super Bantamweight title. He also knocked out the experienced Raymond (Chokor Banku) Commey to retain his national title.

These victories repositioned Mohammed and encouraged him in all his subsequent fights with an unrelenting pursuit of victory, a hunger for success and commitment to leave a lasting impact in the ring.

In October 2018, Mohammed fought another world beater and a prospect undefeated Isaac Sackey for his WBO Africa Super Bantamweight title. After an excellent showcase of boxing artistry and prowess by both boxers, Mohammed took Sackey the defending champion to the canvas. He (Sackey) rose to his feet immediately but the Referee from Benin, Adorn Bertin waved end of the fight without the mandatory eight count. The Referee was quoted to have said that: the punch that took the defending champion down to kissed the canvass got him dazed off and hypnotized. He simply applied the rules and his prerogative as it were, to protect the boxer’s life.

Mohammed exhibited so much confidence in his fights since then with an extraordinary passion, intensity and unwavering belief in his ring craftsmanship and ability.

Mohammed added value to his professional boxing career paradigm in 2019 when he defeated the credible and durable Tanzanian Loren Japhet by round 11 Technical Knockout (TKO) to win the much awaiting and close to call WBO Global Super Bantamweight title.

In his first title defense, Wasiru Mohammed defeated John Amuzu from Benin in round four to solidify his credibility and potential for the world title. After various analysis and permutations, he was promoted and moved into the top 10 of World Boxing Organization (WBO) rankings for the first time.

Fortunately or unfortunately, it was at this point that Wasiru Mohammed decided to exit the ring for no cogent reasons. Efforts to bring him back into the ring proved futile.

However, after subsequent engagements with the young talented boxer, he has decided to bounce back with a huge bang to reshape public thoughts on his boxing career and do everything humanly possible to forget the past and concentrate on his future.

Wasiru Mohammed barring any unforeseeable circumstances will lace up his boots, wear his gloves and step into the ring today Saturday June 19, 2024 on the Ayitey Powers fight night of fists bill at the Bukom Boxing Arena and let his commitment, passion, resilience, hunger for success, unwavering determination push him to achieve success in today’s fight and in every step of his life, and should never give up or surrender to anything less than his best.

Information available to the author of this piece has it that, Mohammed was quoted to have said: “I am a change person who is ready to face any challenge in my life and always be reminded not to give up and always fight for what I believe in”.

The legendary Sugar Ray Leonard once said: “Boxing is the ultimate challenge. There is nothing that can compare to testing yourself the way you do every time you step into the ring”.

Let’s hope Wasiru Mohammed will use this platform provided him by the Ayitey Powers Boxing Promotions to rewrite his name in the books of potential world champions of Ghana.

Wasiru “Gyata Bi” Mohammed and my respected readers of this piece must take note that success is not just about physical and spiritual strengths but also mental toughness, resilience, good listening, humility, discipline, effective communication and unwavering passion.
