The Ghana Professional Boxing League has increased in viewership and accessible on national television.

However, the organization of the event seems to tackle only one aspect of Ghana’s boxing issues.

Boxing stakeholders have advised organizers to improve the program to benefit Ghana in the long term.

The Ghana Professional Boxing League is a series of bouts promoted by IMAX Media Promotions with support from the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA). The event started in 2022 (season 1) over 20 fight night contests pairing clubs among each other.

Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation emerged winners of Season 1 and Charles Tetteh of Panix Boxing Club won the best boxer Award.

The league is in its second season with two fight nights already done.

The highly exciting program has a number of short comings:

Paramount of which professional debutants are matched against highly experienced boxers in a 6 round context. This matchups often result in defeats for the debutants, and on Boxrec, the ratings of such highly experienced boxers do not appreciate. This makes it a lose-lose situation for both boxers.

Secondly, although the program is championed by the GBA, the events are centred around Accra and for Accra based boxers and clubs. Ghana has 16 regions, however, the GBA has made little effort to expand the professional boxing beyond the Greater Accra Region.

In as much as the prize of a car improves the livelihood of the boxer, it does not improve his ring career.

The boxing league can benefit Ghana if it’s limited to boxers within the same development range; for instance boxers with a fight record of below 5 bouts.

Another recommendation is that, the top boxers at the end of the league should fight for a National Title and the winner receives in addition to the car, a 4-bout promotional deal in collaboration with international promoters to offer the boxer added opportunity to fight for a West African title or/and an African title. These actions will position the boxer to attract possible international bouts drawing Ghana closer to its world championship dreams.

The bout rounds should also be increased, based on the level of experience of boxers in accordance with international fight requirements to help improve the standings of Ghanaian boxers on Boxrec.
