Samuel Takyi nicknamed the ‘Ring Warrior’ represents Ghana in the Featherweight division at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics and remains the only boxer still representing Ghana after his teammates Sulemanu Tetteh and Shakul Samed Bastir lost in their second and first fights respectively.
Takyi was adjudged winner in his first fight by a unanimous 5-0 decision in his opening bout.
After losing his teammates in the competition, Samuel ‘Ring Warrior’ Takyi kept to his promise to redeem the image of Ghana as he was set to face Avila Ceiber of Columbia.
In the opening round, Takyi received lots of punches losing on all score cards of the 5 judges.
He returned into the second round more composed and focused, released punches when necessary landing some power shots that won him the second. His explosive combination landed on the face of Ceiber in a ring hook followed by a left as Ceiber counted with a right punch.
Avila Ceiber’s corner knowing the two boxers were on a tie ensured their boxer goes all out to finish hard but The ‘Ring Warrior’ who has previously named a ‘ferociously enterprising boxer’ unleashed his fury as the two boxers traded punches into the final seconds of the bout.
Samuel ‘Ring Warrior’ Takyi is currently the only Ghanaian medal hopeful after qualifying to the semifinals of the Featherweight championship at the Tokyo Olympics with his promise to Ghanaians intact.
His adventure has paid off and is bound to win an Olympic medal after his enterprising 3-2 split decision victory over Avila Ceiber of Columbia.
Praises is been sang to Takyi for his heroic and perseverance in the ring.
Ghanaians can be rest assured now, that Ghana did not only participate in the Tokyo Olympics but also in the race for laurels.
