🇨🇩 Countdown to the Africa Elite Boxing Championships, Kinshasa, DR Congo, October 14-27
Commonwealth Games silver medallist Richarno Colin and two-time Olympian Mervin Clair have been left out of Mauritius’ team for the Africa Elite Boxing Championships in Kinshasa this month.
Flyweight sensation Valerie Fabrice (pictured), bantamweight Guillaume Francis and welterweight Amene Marquis are the three boxers who will represent Mauritius in Kinshasa.
Valerie won gold and Marquis bronze in the inaugural Mandela Africa Boxing Cup tournament in Durban this year to enable the Indian Ocean Island nation place third overall with two gold and two bronze medals.
Announcing the team, Mauritius Boxing Federation President Pascal Telvar said Colin is still nursing an injury while Clair, who is moving up to middleweight, has been inconsistent in training.
“We only give chance to boxers performing well in training and attending training sessions regularly, there’s is also the transition factor in place,” said Telvar.
The team will be handled by the National Training Director, Cuban Roberto Chavez assisted by former international boxer Josiah Lebon.
Mauritius finished 14th overall in last year’s Africa Elite Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon, with one silver and a bronze medal. Light-welterweight Richarno Colin won silver after losing in the finals to Algeria’s Jugurtha Ait Beka and Clair settled for bronze losing in the semi-finals to the eventual gold medallist Mbiya Kulenguluka of DR Congo.
