Richard Commey received a hero’s welcome after arriving in Ghana following a boxing match which saw him win a world title.
Commey landed at the Kotoka International on Thursday, February 14 and fans were at the airport to welcome him.
The fans numbering close to 800 stormed the VVIP section of the airport clad in white clothes to welcome the new world champion.
The deputy sports minister, Perry Okudzeto, Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) president, Peter Zwennes, Commey’s manager, Michael Amoo-Bediako, and other dignitaries were at the airport to welcome him.
Speaking to the media at the airport, the 31-year-old boxer thanked the fans for coming in their numbers to welcome.
“I’m overwhelmed with this support,” he said. “I thank each and everyone who took time off his or her busy schedule to come here (airport).”
“This is the just the beginning, there will be more world titles on the way.”
On February 2, 2019, in Frisco Texas, Commey became Ghana’s ninth world champion after defeating Rusia Isa Chaniev.
The Ghanaian proved too strong for Chaniev as he stopped the latter in round 2 to win the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) world lightweight title.
With the win, Commey thus becomes the first Ghanaian lightweight boxer to win the world title.
