Richard Commey is in a pole position to win the Sports Writers Association of Ghana’s Sports personality of the year award if he is able to win the world title against Isa Chaniev from Russia on the 2nd of February 2019 at Frisca in Texas.
After making his debut in February 2011 against Baba Nsor, two split controversial decisions succumbed Richard Oblitey Commey to delay his moment of destiny with the world title.
A contestable defeat to American Robert Easter Jr. on September 9, 2016 for the vacant International Boxing Federation World Lightweight Title at the Santander Arena, Reading, Pennsylvania, delayed the Ghanaian the opportunity to wear the strap.
But the Ghanaian has fought his way back into contention with a lot of hard work and will not come as surprise if he wins the world title and by extension the SWAG award.
Isaac Dogboe is the current holder of the SWAG Sports Personality of the year Award after defeating the then champion Jesse Magadaleno via an 11th round TKO.
Members of SWAG voted him as the sports personality of the year 2017 when he was awarded in May 2018
Dogboe, after winning the world title, fought twice, one defeat to Emanuel Navarrete and a win against Hidenori Otake.
Commey on the other had two fights with two victories against Alejandro Luna and Yardley Armanta Cruz.
Commey is now going for the ultimate head to head clash against Russian Isa Chaniev in the first week of next month February.
Despite Dogboe’s capture of the world title happening in 2018/2017 Dogboe worked his way into the number one spot by defeating Cesar Juarez.
On the year, Dogboe deservedly was also named the Professional boxer of the year as well.
The 44th edition of the prestigious, longest running sports awards in Ghana promises to be close and exciting, but it would be a travesty of justice if Richard Commey wins the world title and gets eluded on the domestic award.
