Later today, 6 clubs within the Bukom area will meet at the Wisdom Boxing Gym in Accra for a Sparring Session.
Wisdom Boxing Gym is one of the over 20 boxing gyms within the Gamashie area. The club is headed by Coach Ofori Asare, who founded the club nearly 30 years ago.
Wisdom is known for its strong fighters and wild cards, especially in the amateur ranks.
The club is today organizing a public sparring session for its club members and boxers from other clubs.
According to its Head Coach, Sparring is one of the learning techniques in the sport of boxing. It enables boxers to use their knowledge-given talent in a tactical way. It is also a way for the Coach to identify intelligent boxers. The purpose of this sparring is to give boxers the opportunity to display their skills.
Wisdom Boxing Gym currently has 87 boxers across Junior, Youth, Elite Amateurs and professionals. With the lack of competition in the country, the team has come up with this initiative to keep the boxers active as they prepare for 2023 competitions.
Ghana Boxing Federation and Greater Accra Boxing Association which often organize boxing events have not yet announced the dates for the 2023 open competitions. Meanwhile, the first quarter of the year is nearly over.
Punch Fest is the 4th sparring session organized by Wisdom Boxing Gym.
The program will feature Wisdom boxers against boxers from Akotoku Academy, Jamestown Boxing Club, Bukom Boxing Club, Will Power Boxing Club and Palm Spring Boxing Club.
Coach Grace from Grace Boxing Club has lauded the initiative and has encouraged other clubs to adopt the initiative to keep boxers active and motivated.
Some of the popular boxers who will be participating in this training program includes; Theophilus Allotey, Africanus Kotey, Daniel Plange, Benard Quartey, James Okoe, Caleb Mensah and Wesley Ayi- Bontey.
All participants have been weighed and will be fighting according to their weights and level of boxing knowledge.
The event will kick start at 4:00pm at the club facility in Accra.
