Fighting to become a member of the aristocratic class is the vision of young Elijah Mensah.

Meet Elijah Mensah, a fourteen (14) year old juvenile boxer at the Jamestown Boxing Club. I call him the boy who is using his fists to move closer to his dreams daily.

According to the youngster, with every punch, weave, step forward and step back, he is getting closer to becoming an important member of the society.

The Jamestown Boxing Club under the guidance of Head Coach Randy Amugi is nurturing young boys and girls in the community of Jamestown and Ussher Town to become responsible adults through boxing.

Elijah is a pupil of the Accra Sempe Basic School. In 2018, he was enrolled to learn boxing at Sea View Boxing Club. He joined Jamestown Boxing club in 2021 with 2 of his friends (Samuel Plange and Blessing Dzabo).

Elijah’s motivation for learn boxing is to become an important member of society. In his own words, he said

“I want to build a house for my parents, my coaches and my fans”.

Certainly, Elijah’s house must be large enough to accommodate his many fans.

The motivation to use boxing as a social ladder is not uncommon as various Juvenile boxers from “low class” families share similar dreams.

Elijah Mensah believes his dreams will come to pass because he works hard by training from Monday to Friday every week.

He explained “boxing is not easy but if you want to learn it, you have to be ready to take the pains. I am ready to learn it well”.

You can find Elijah training at the boxing club every Monday to Friday within the City Engineers compound, as he fights to rise above poverty.
