Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) President Peter Zwennes is convinced that the only boxers that can win World title for Ghana this year are Isaac Dogboe and Richard Commey.
It has been over seven years since Ghana won a World title – the last boxer to do that was Jospeh Agbeko
However, three weeks ago, two Ghanaian boxers Habib Ahmed and Maxwell Awuku in their bid to win a World title for Ghana were blasted out in round six and three respectively.
And according to Zwennes, Ahmed and Awuku were not boxers that were qualified for a world title bout as they were defeated and outclassed in their respective bouts.
“It is not lack of preparations that made them lose. They are not ready for a world title and they are not in a class of boxers who should be fighting for a world title.
“Their promoters managed to push them to the first 10 of the rating for the various sanctioning bodies.
“It is true we want many shots for world titles, but it is sad that people who do not merit the chance right now get the chance to fight and that is the end result. You saw the way they were outclassed.
“It creates a bad impression for Ghana boxing and we know Ghana boxing has a high standard and I can confirm to you that the sport is on a high ascendency except for those unfortunate setbacks”, he told Power Sports.
He also mentioned that Ghanaian boxers have failed to win bouts outside Ghana due to lack of preparation, quality of the opponents they fight with and controversial scoring and officiating.
“All our world titles have been won outside the country in the past but it depends on the boxers and their conditioning. Richmond Commey just recently should have won his bout against the Russian but was robbed”.
“If the boxers want to become world champions they need to go beyond the shores of Ghana to get the needed training and techniques and the right people at their corner”, he added.
Dogboe will face Jessie Magdaleno on April 14th in Las Vegas – at stake will be Magdaleno’s WBO World super bantamweight belt.
Commey will mount the ring on March 10th against Alejandro Luna in an IBF World lightweight eliminator.
