Ghana boxing is on the ascendency, so are top industry players contributing towards the course but behind the scenes. The administrative man lifting the pugilism art to its highest pinnacle is Patrick Johnson.

Meet Patrick Johnson, the Secretary General of Ghana’s most powerful governing and sanctioning boxing body, the (GBA) Ghana Boxing Authority.

A masters degree graduate of Malaysian based OUM and former undergraduate degree holder at Accra Institute of Technology in Accra- Ghana.

Patrick is the man responsible for the administration, development and promotional works of the GBA.

He coordinates office activities and operations to secure efficiency and compliance to the authority’s policies. Supervise administrative staff and divide responsibilities to ensure performance.

He manages agendas/travel arrangements/appointments etc. Manage phone calls and correspondence (e-mail, letters).

Patrick Johnson began his career 9 years ago in 2010 as a sports administrator, after his initial professional spell as a footballer playing in Brunei as a central defender.

Focal part of his success story was at the All African Games, 2011 when he helped the Taekwando team to secure silver and gold medals. The BodyBuilding team also hosted the African Championship here in Ghana.

The diligent workaholic currently handles five disciplines which includes Boxing, Disabled and Para Sports, Table Tennis, Shooting and Mixed Martial Arts.

Patrick Johnson handles the day-to-day running of these associations efficiently and strong links are formed with external partners such as local authorities.

For a visionary man that was part of the people that brought the sport of Mixed Martial Arts to Ghana as one of the directors, it does not come as a surprise that the very God fearing Patrick Johnson fellowships at the Love Community Chapel, located inside Bubiashie and is even a lead singer there.

In my informal conversation with him, I posed the question, what is the secret; He responded “God is my secret.” I said really? “Yes my brother, sowing seeds, fasting and praises and worship.”

A wise man once said “let God lead you and everything will follow.” Indeed there really must be a lot of truth in that.

The Secretary General is a family person aside his religion and work, and has four lively children with the beautiful Mrs. Christabel Naa Kordie Johnson who works with Vodafone Ghana at the Customer Service Department.

Nana Afua Fosua is the eldest amongst three girls and a boy.

Patrick’s strong understanding of human relations makes him standout everywhere and though he prefers to remain behind the scenes doing just his works, his good works sets him apart.

In recent times, Patrick spent his time making trips to support most Ghanaian boxers and was at the Dogboe versus Navarrete fight in the USA. He equally made the trip to watch the Ghanaian win the world title in April for the first time against Jesse Magdaleno at the Liacouras Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

For one man to command such powerful portfolios speaks of his competence and deliverables. His Master of Business Administration makes him standout in most brand and publicity related businesses.

Today we celebrate a comrade in our quest to promote boxing to its business destination — Patrick Johnson, The Secretary General, GBA.
