Oscar De La Hoya Calls Out Mayweather For a Re-match

Former welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya has dramatically called out Floyd Mayweather for a rematch after being hospitalised with coronavirus.

The 48-year-old had been due to return to the ring after a 12-year absence to face Brazilian MMA fighter Vitor Belford but the bout was cancelled when de la Hoya contracted COVID-19.

It would have been his first fight since a TKO loss to Manny Pacquiao in December 2008.

De La Hoya though remains keen on a comeback fight but insists the bout will have to take place in the new year so that he can physically and mentally prepare himself.

Now he has laid the gauntlet down to Mayweather with TMZ Sports, via The Sun, talking of a $100m (£75m) showdown.

De La Hoya said: “Personally, right now I’m not motivated because of Covid.

“I was actually in great shape and then Covid hit me, so my morale right now is a little low in terms of me fighting in the ring personally.
“But come January, I’m sure I will get right back into it and start training again and prepare myself mentally first.

“But I do want to get out there again, possibly Cinco De Mayo (May 5).

“Who knows, it could be Floyd Mayweather. It’s probably the biggest fight you could make today.”

The duo famously met in 2007 with the fight billed “The World Awaits”.

Mayweather edged past De La Hoya on the night, via split decision, before announcing his retirement, despite a rematch scheduled for September 2008.
