Burundi’s boxing wondergirl Ornella Havyarimana (pictured) is through to the round of 16 in the Bangkok Olympic qualifiers.

Ornella, the first Burundi boxer to win a medal – a silver – in the Africa Elite Championships, outpointed Afghanistan’s Lala Kargar in the bantamweight division to keep alive her hopes of qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

While it was all smiles for Ornella, not so for Kenya’s African Games bantamweight bronze medallist Amina Martha who lost on points to Canada’s Scarlett Delgado to become the 41st African boxer to fall by the wayside in Bangkok and the fourth Kenyan loser in the week-long championships.

With Amina out, Kenya now remains with welterweight Friza Anyango and heavyweight Peter Abuti.
