The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority (NSA) on Tuesday met with Presidents of all Sports Associations and Federations (Contact Sports Division) to adopt various measures of government (with input from the Associations /Federations) following President Akufo-Addo’s removal of restrictions on contact sports to allow them to train and organize competitive sporting activities.
Professor Peter Twumasi DG of the NSA chaired the meeting on behalf of Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon Isaac Asiamah.
Leadership of various sports thanked Government for the excellent work in the managing the pandemic since March when all sporting activities were suspended as part of measures to fight the Coronavirus pandemic in Ghana.
They also appealed to government to absorb cost of testing for all elite sportsmen and women returning to our stadiums and training centres.
They also expect government to consider other stimulus packages for sports sector including payment of YEA/NSA allowances to ALL ELITE athletes from all sporting disciplines.
Already 1,000 elite athletes are receiving ghc 500 each per month from Government.
Meanwhile, the NSA, on behalf of government is to compile timetable of sporting activities for all sports associations from now till end of 2021 and use this to guide implementation of various protocols.
Presidents of GFA (Mr Kurt Okraku), Rugby (Mr Herbert Mensah), Taekwondo (Mr Frederick Lartey Otu), Boxing (Mr George Lamptey), Hockey (Dr Ben Asante), Karate do (Mr. Melvin Brown), Badminton (Mr. Evans Yeboah), (Mr. Albert Frompong) Baseball, (Rev. Nikoi) Netball, (Ms Christie Ashley) Chess and Arm Wrestling (Mr Osei Assibey) were among those present.
