Ghana’s Sena Agbeko lost in round two to Cuban born, Minneapolis based David Morrell Jnr.
The bout was for the WBA Regular Super Middleweight Championship and the last event of Showtime’s close to four decades of exceptional boxing coverage.
Staged at The Armory in Minneapolis: Morrell’s adopted home, the encounter had many subplots after an initial deal fell through in April much to the displeasure of the hard punching Ghanaian.
But David Morrell Jnr substantiated all the hype with an impressive showing on fight night in front of a home crowd.
Sena looked composed in the first stanza but was cornered with flurries of hard hooks and upper cuts prompting a stoppage by the referee.
This loss, the third in Agbeko’s twenty nine fight career is also his second stoppage, but the resilient and strong minded combatant believes he’d regroup and return stronger.
“I mean, I give Morrell all the props, he did a great job tonight. But as to why the Minnesota Commission declined to do the mandatory drug testing even after I drew their attention, I can’t fathom. But that takes nothing away from Morrell. He was the better man tonight and I wish him well”, said Sena on the aftermath.
He also hinted on moving down to 160 lbs for his next fight. Morrell improves to a perfect 10 – 0.
