Morocco’s Abidine Amroug survived a second round knockdown against Kenya’s Boniface Mogunde in a thrilling light-middleweight semi-final bout here in Kinshasa.

Mogunde defeated Amroug by a split points decision, and now meets Burundi’s Nestor Nduwarugira in the finals in what will be an all-East African Region final.

It will be the second time Mogunde will be fighting the Burundi boxer whom he defeated in the Zone 3 tournament here in Kinshasa two years ago.

“I’m excited to be in the final of the Africa Championships for the first time, God above everything,” said Mogunde surrounded by his excited teammates and Kenya’s Embassy staff in Kinshasa.

Mogunde, Elizabeth Andiego and Clinton Macharia are the three Kenyan boxers in the finals out of the eight who fought in the semi-finals, a remarkable improvement from last year’s Africa Championships in which all the seven semi-finalists lost in Yaounde.
