When Sheriff Quaye stunned Michael Ansah last year via a split decision in a fight of the year contest, not many anticipated an immediate rematch by Ghana’s now former lightweight champion.
This morning at the Bukom Boxing Arena, the biggest brawl was settled in the Mecca of African boxing, Bukom that saw Michael ‘One Bullet’ Ansah the underdog KOed a fantastic boxer in Sheriff Quaye in the weirdest of ways.
Truth be told, the self styled “One Bullet” was the far superior man in the ring against Sheriff Quaye in Saturday’s Box Office Sports promotions headline bout.
It was a thrilling ending to boxing’s double header return of Joshua Clottey for the first time at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra Ghana which saw the 41 year old former world champion pitting his gloves against the much younger Tanzanian Mfaume Mfaume. In a father and son encounter, the Ghanaian proved too experienced for the resilient fighter.
The challenger, Michael Ansah adopted an aggressive, measured approach and hardly gave the champion the breathing space.
His combo and overhead hooks seemed to unsettled the champion who looked dehydrated and kept throwing slaps more than punches, simply put Sheriff was neither himself nor in his fighting elements as he eventually succumbed in the 7th round.
Credit to Michael Ansah for his unequal enthusiasm and showboating which seemed to have paid off in the end.
Despite getting a win this morning, Ansah’s next step is an intriguing one because not many anticipated this debacle of an upset, indeed, the biggest in recent times.
Make no mistake, Michael Ansah has commanded the bragging rights in the “Bukom Brawl,” and is now the new Ghana lightweight Champion.
