2021 was an exciting boxing year for the Greater Accra Region with over 6 tournaments held for boxers in all weight classes. This tournament led to the unearthing of various talents, one of which is Edem Azumah, a boxer training at Wisdom Boxing Club in Accra.
Edem, like many of the new crop of boxers combine boxing with education. He is a second year student of Saint Thomas Aquinas Senior High School in Accra but trains every weekday after studying for hours at school each day.
Speaking exclusively to BoxinGhana.com Edem disclosed that he came into the sport through a family friend.
In his words he said
“I never thought of being a boxer which is quiet funny if I may say. I started building my body at age 13 so before I got to age 16, I almost looked like a 20 year old young man. The idea of becoming a boxer had not come to my mind at that time until one day a very good friend of mine, a big brother to me, Mr Peter Azameti Bamfo came over to our place to visit. As soon as he saw me he was like “kwerr you for go fight boxing oo, because this your body no be small body”. I giggled and left, I didn’t take his words serious at that point until he eventually came over again. At that point, I gathered courage and told him I was interested in the sport “Boxing”. With no hesitation, he drove me to one of the best boxing gyms in the entire country. The gym is called Wisdom Boxing Gym, the name even tells.
“So from that fateful day, I started training at the gym till today”.
“The kind man who introduced and brought me to the gym is Mr. Raymond Tibson but he’s popularly known to be called Mr. Waren or Waren G.”
Since early 2021, Edem has been training at Wisdom Boxing Gym and has improved and progressed quickly, which manifested in his victory at the Greater Accra Regional Championships.
Leonard Edem Azumah participated in the Ghana National Individual Championships, however he lost his first fight in the middle weight.
Edem shared that he is proud of his achievements so far and feels like a champion having the opportunity to show his skills in front of all Ghanaians.
He hopes to achieve greatness in the coming years while he inspires others in and outside the ring.
“5 years from now, my story is going to be a unique one” he confidently stated.
“A young, inspired and energetic lad, Leonard Edem Azumah will positively make a great impact in the history of Ghana boxing and the world of boxing at large. My story will be heard in every corner of Planet earth, WATCH OUT”
