Meet Gabriel Junior (pictured), a media magnate in Maputo, who is the driving force behind the success of Zone 4 champions Mozambique.
The deep-pocketed President of Mozambique Boxing Federation, who’s also Zone 4 President, rarely relies on government funding unlike some federations in Africa which survive on government handouts.
He runs a successful federation with a healthy bank account as other financially-crippled federations in Africa struggle to remain afloat.
While coach Lucas Sinoia is credited for identifying and grooming Mozambique boxing glamour girls, Alcinda Dos Santos and Rady Gramane into world-class pugilists, the financial support of Gabriel Jr has been a key factor in their success including exposure in major international tournaments in Europe.
Mozambique proved its mettle in the inaugural Mandela African Boxing Cup tournament by finishing second behind DRC and the top-placed Zone 4 nation with two gold and three silver medals.
Interestingly, unlike some loudmouth leaders who keep on barking about their imaginary success, the down-to-earth Gabriel Jr speaks through the achievements of Mozambique in the ring.
You’ll hardly see him thumping his chest on what he has achieved.
