STAGE SET FOR ZIMBABWE TRIALS ON SATURDAY

▫️ Head coach Alexander Kwangari says they intend to pick 12 boxers for Mandela Cup tourney
▫️ All the provinces in Zimbabwe will take part in the trials

Zimbabwe’s Luckmore Kamoto and Wisdom Dube are some of the country’s top boxers who’ll take part in the Mandela Africa Boxing Cup trials on Saturday in Mvurwi town in Mashonaland Central region, national team head coach Alexander Kwangwari announced today.

He said all provinces including Zimbabwe defence forces will participate in this one-day event which will also double as the national championships.

Kamoto, a member of Black Rhinos Club, and Dube from Shumba Boxing Academy, were among the four boxers who represented Zimbabwe in last year’s Men’s World Championships in Uzbekistan.

Lightweight Kamoto was eliminated by Fiji’s Davile John and featherweight Dube lost to De Los Santos from the Dominican Republic. Others in Uzbekistan were welter Lwazi Mpofu who was KO’d by Slovakia’s Petric Nejc and bantamweight Hillary Josamu was stopped in the second by Seidekmatov Sanzhai of Kyrgyzstan. Josamu, who has since turned professional, was the most successful boxer bowing out in pre-quarters with others failing to go past round of 32.

Among other top boxers to trade leather in Saturday’s tournament include Zimbabwe’s prominent female flyweight Agnes Kwashi who participated in the World Military Games in 2019 in Wuhan, China, multiple national flyweight champion Mashal Shiri from Black Rhinos Club and light-welterweight Linox Nyawasa of Roygri Boxing Academy.

“We’re expecting to select a team of 12 boxers for the Mandela Cup tournament, nine men and three women,” said Kwangwari, a bronze medallist at the 1994 Africa Championships in South Africa.
