The loud thumping you hear in the background is the sound of Jaron Ennis beating the drum asking for his shot at a world title – more specifically – Terence Crawford.
Yet, no matter how many eye-catching knockouts he’s put together and regardless of the skills he often displayed, there’s a growing cluster of fans that believe things wouldn’t end well for Ennis if he was given his wish.
Never known as a man with a ton to say, Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) continued that trend when he was recently asked to give his opinion on those who believe it’s a tad bit too early for him to share the ring with the pound-for-pound star.
“Keep Doubting Me,” Ennis told YSM Sports Media.
By and large, Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) has always been considered the cream of the welterweight crop but this past Saturday night, he solidified those thoughts. On July 29th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Crawford fought a near flawless fight against Errol Spence Jr. The now former champ was dropped three times, hurt on multiple occasions, and eventually stopped in the ninth round.
Before facing off against Crawford, Spence looked practically unbeatable in the ring. He broke the orbital bones of both Kell Brook and Yordenis Ugas and routinely dished out an insane amount of punishment. Crawford though, was a different animal, prompting many to believe that Ennis should simply leave him alone at this stage in his career.
The Philly native isn’t the type to ask for favors. But in this case, he breaks character. If he’s given the opportunity to face Crawford next and goes on to defeat him, Ennis wants all of his doubters to remain on the other side of the street. Simply put, the bandwagon is already full.
“Keep that same energy. Don’t try to switch sides. ‘Ah I always knew he could do it.’ No, I ain’t trying to hear none of that. Stay where y’all at. I see everything.”
At the moment, Crawford’s immediate future is in Spence’s hands. With the former unified titlist revealing that he plans on activating his rematch clause, Crawford would then be contractually obligated to face him once again.
Ennis, ultimately, is hoping that Spence will have a change of heart and clear the way for him to step in.
“I want that now.”
