The Sports Ministry today fulfilled a promise they made to Ghanaian athlete Jesse Lartey at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
A cash of 2000 dollars was presented to Jesse Lartey for winning bronze during the games in boxing.
Presenting the money was the acting Director General National Sports Authority Mr. Majid who presented it to the young Jessie Lartey at the National Sports Council today.
The President for Ghana Boxing Federation Mr. George Lamptey took the opportunity to thank the current minister Hon. Asiamah and his former deputy Pius Enam Hadzide for their effort in securing not just the money but fulfilling the promise made.
” Many thanks to the substantive Minister Hon. Asiamah and his former Duputy Pius Enam Hadzide for their effort and the work they put in. For sure this is going to motivate the other athletes to work harder. It’s a good precedent.” George Lamptey said.
In attendance was one of Ghana’s most accomplished trainer Coach Ofori Asare, First Vice President – Mohammed Abdul Samad and other high profile dignatories.
Ghanaian athletes were promised a 10,000 dollar compensation for Gold and 5000 dollars for silver with 2000 dollars going for the bronze medallist.
Jessie Lartey was the only athlete to have won a medal for Ghana. He secured third place which guaranteed him a bronze medal in boxing.
With the fulfilment of the promise, many athletes are now going to be very motivated to go the extra mile in order to achieve greatness for their nation Ghana.
With Tokyo 2020 games just around the corner, the gesture must serve as motivation for all athletes.
There is alot happening in Ghana Boxing fraternity and much must be accorded to the current managers of the sport.
On 28th September, the National League starts which is dubbed ( fist of fury), then there is another mouth-watering individual competition to select pugilist into the national team proper the Black Bombers on the 1st week of October.
Ghana Boxing is really inching higher. Kudos to Jessie Lartey who though lost in a unanimous decision to Thomas Blumenfeld from Canada in the semifinals secured a bronze medal for Ghana.
