The scorecard read 115-112, 115-112 for Vargas, and 114-113 for Magsayo as former WBC super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas (36-0, 22 KOs)survived a round 9 knockdown to secured a split decision victory.

The fight lived up to it’s hype as Mark Magsayo (24-1, 16 KOs) put up a spirited performance but came shot against the hot favorite Ray Vargas at the Showtime at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Ray Vargas, When quizzed on how complicated the fight was in his post fight comments, he reiterated the contrary.

“It wasn’t complicated at all,” Vargas said during his post-fight press conference. “But we really felt comfortable throughout. And technically, we felt sound. We knew that we were doing things right round-by-round. So, the end result was what we expected.” he expressed.

As expected, Mark Magsayo was very disappointed but equally reiterated the point that he did his best.

“No matter what, I’ll come back stronger, I’m disappointed, but I did my best.”

Credit must be granted Vargas who fought smart by maintaining his distance and using his reach to his advantage.

Now the winner of Isaac Dogboe, Joet Gonzalez is a potential challenger for the WBC belt as Vargas’s first defense later in the year.
