🇹🇭 Countdown to 2nd World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Thailand from May 24 to June 2, 2024
I’m really eager to qualify for the Olympic Games for the first time -Keddy Agnes
Seychellois multiple gold medallist and the most decorated boxer, Keddy Evans Agnes and Shain Boniface, have been selected to participate in the 2nd World Olympic Qualification tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 24 to June 2.
The secretary-general of Seychelles Boxing Federation Edmond Folette said the two boxers will be accompanied by coach Gerry Legras, a former international boxer who excelled in the Fescaaba Championships.
In a telephone interview with Keddy from Seychelles, he said he’s really eager to participate in the Olympic Games for the first time.
“I’ve been to the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and other big tournaments in Africa but I’ve yet to be in the Olympics,” says Keddy, one of the two medallists in the recent inaugural Mandela African Boxing Cup tournament in Durban, South Africa where he settled for bronze in the super-heavyweight division with middleweight Joshua Cousin winning gold in the middleweight class to enable Seychelles finish in the 10th overall position.
Keddy, the two-time Sportsman of the Year, is currently the face of boxing in the Seychelles and is held in high esteem by the boxing fraternity in the Indian Ocean country.
He started boxing in 2007, and made his international debut in 2011.
Three years later, he won a bronze medal in the 2015 African Games in Brazzaville and added another bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia at super-heavyweight.
As a multiple gold medallist, Keddy boasts four gold medals in Zone 4 Championships and three gold in the Indian Ocean Games, and several silver medals among them during last year’s Africa Elite Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon. He bagged a bronze at the Africa Olympic qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal.
Meanwhile, Seychelles Boxing Federation secretary-general, Edmond Folette said plans are underway for Seychelles to host two international tournaments this year.
“We are planning to host two local international competitions in June and September, if all goes well we will invite Reunion and possibly a club from Russia known as Rostov,” said Follette.
