Richard Commey’s promoter, Lou Dibella, has indicated that the former IBF lightweight world champion has what it takes on the other top fighters in the division.
According to the US-based promoter, the James Town native can provide legitimate tests for Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia or Gervonta Davis if they’re not going to fight each other.
Per a report on Boxingscene.com, Garcia and Haney could be headed toward respective fights against Javier Fortuna and Jorge Linares, but DiBella also is confident Commey would be a dangerous foe for an older former lightweight champion who is looking for an opponent.
In an interview with Boxingscene.com, Dibella said, “I always thought that Teofimo Lopez was a worse matchup for Commey than Lomachenko would be,” DiBella told BoxingScene.com. “I think Commey – a long, very aggressive guy with one-punch power, who’s bigger than Lomachenko – is a danger to Lomachenko. So, if you wanna make a real fight for Lomachenko, and it’s not gonna be Teofimo, put him in with Commey. That’s also a terrific fight.”
On Commey’s comeback fight against Jackson Marinez on Saturday, February 13, 2021, Dibella had this to say,
“I thought it was sensational, but I thought he was capable of it,” DiBella said. “But you know what? When a guy was knocked out the way Commey was, you don’t know that he’s gonna react that way. To be honest, it doesn’t happen that often. It happened with Lennox Lewis. There are others. There are people who just got caught flush and then came back and did OK. But it’s more rare than it is common. I mean, [Marinez] was a top-10 guy. That guy clearly beat Rolly Romero [a controversial loss in Marinez’s previous fight]. That was a top-10 guy that Richard just demolished. I was very impressed.”
Commey returned to the ring for the first time in 14 months after losing his IBF belt to Teofimo Lopez.
The Ghanaian destroyed Marinez in the sixth-round of their scheduled ten-rounder.
