I told Don King this is your African Slave – Azumah Nelson

Boxing legend, Hall of famer and Ghana’s all time great Professor Azumah Nelson has debunked the assertion that Don King was/is a cheat rather than a businessman.

The Ghanaian legend recounted how he once broke the resistance of the famous promoter in a similar incident.

“I said I was no longer going to fight because the my purse was too small. I packed my bags ready for home, then I got a call and it was from Don King. As usual, he started to talk me into accepting the deal

I only responded by saying Hello, Don King this is your African slave please talk to me…. He went dead silent and just dropped the call.

Next minutes, He rushed to my Hotel in a razor sharp speed and said to me, tell me how much you want my brother and I am going to pay you.” Azumah recounted.

Ghana’s most respected sportsman was speaking during a television interview  on(a local television station) UTV with Daniel Kwaku Yeboah.

Most of Don King’s boxers sued him for allegedly defrauding them.  Though most of the lawsuits were settled out of court.

For example, Former undisputed World Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, described Don King as “A wretched, slimy, reptilian motherfucker. This is supposed to be my ‘black brother’, right? He’s just a bad man, a real bad man. He would kill his own mother for a dollar.

He’s ruthless, he’s deplorable, he’s greedy … and he doesn’t know how to love anybody.” Tyson ended.

In 1982 he was sued by Muhammad Ali for underpaying him $1.1 million for a fight with Larry Holmes. King was later sued by Larry Holmes as well.

Mentions could made of Chris Byrd, Lenox Lewis, Terry Norris, Mike Tyson himself just to mention a but few.

But as Azumah celebrates his 60th birthday, the professor chose to concentrate on the positive side of a controversial matchmaker who divides opinion.

Bukom Boxing Arena is going to be entreated to some boxing artistry come the 21st of this month July as the “Zoom Zoom professor’ climaxes his birthday celebration with some boxing pairings.

As expected, the iconic boxing figure is expected to add another honour to his countless accolades by the world’s premier boxing sanctioning body – The World Boxing Council (WBC) on the said date.
