National Welterweight Champion, Sampson Segbedzi has issued a strong warning to all contenders in his weight class in Ghana and Africa that he is ever ready to defend his belts, but they should come big with good offers and lucrative offers.
Speaking to Your Truly in an exclusive interview at The Gym in Accra, the Ashaiman budding hero said he is never afraid of any boxer, but the sport is dangerous so the stars need to be adequately rewarded for their efforts, skill and talent.
“I am very expensive and the titles were bought with good money. I have invested in my training and life as a boxer and I don’t joke because it is big business for me and so the remuneration must be good. I am ready for any promoter who wants a good show” he said.
Sampson Segbedzi defeated Isaac Commey to become the National Champion. He also holds the UBO Africa Welterweight belt as well as PST Tanzania title.
He hails from Kpa kpa in Adidome, Volta Region and aims to become Africa and World Champion in the near future.
Backed by his unblemished record of 9-0′-0, he hopes to emulate his mentor, Floyd Mayweather and be remembered as one of Africa’s best boxers.
He loves football and Christian Roland is his favourite footballer. He plays pool football at his free periods and loves music. Stonebowy is an inspiration because they all reside at Ashaiman.
Popularly called Mama’s Boy, he never feels pampered but loves to crack hard nuts and venture the unknown.
He gives much appreciation to his coaches Nii Gonti Adjor 1 aka Nii Adama Addy and Laryea aka Lion for their superb guidance and tactical / technical support as well as his manager, Mr. Albert Ayeebo of Wintuma Enterprise
As first boxing champion of his hometown and Ashaiman, he feels honoured and thanked all the chiefs, elders and grannies of Adidome.
Segbedzi feels there must be reforms in Ghana Boxing with credible champions and ratings. He called for transparency and appreciative remuneration for boxers, trainers and other officials.
