GOC President commends MOYS’s YEA package for 1,000 National Sports Men and Women
Ghana Olympic Committee GOC President Ben Nunoo Mensah made many revelations when he was interviewed on INQUEST at GTV Sports Plus by Dr. Kweku Ofosu Asare.
According to the affable sports administrator, 1,000 National athletes would soon benefit from the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) Package as the sports men and women await for the Ministry of Finance Package to cushion them against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking on measures to mitigate the effects of Covid-19 on Olympic Sports, he made known that the young men and women who do sports were very much affected during the lock down and up till now.
He believes the Sports Media should be responsible in promoting the sports brand, and learn from the old guys like Kweku Ofosu Asare, Kwabena Yeboah Karl Tufoir and Moses Foh Amoaning than indulging in negative news.
Also the President of Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), he noted that attaching some journalists to Federations was in the right direction as the least financed sports became popular, but due to financial complications they could not be sustained.
He expressed that no positive sponsor will associate with a negative brand, so the media must turn their ways and work better, as no one checks what uninformed young reporters say on the radio.
He commended Hon. Isaac Asiamah, the sports minister and Hon. Perry Okudzeto, the deputy minister, and their consultants like Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah and Rex Danquah for coming up with a package for the sporting youth from the YEA.
On the Amasaman Sports Complex For Excellence In Youth Sports, he said it is gradually shaping up with the Municipal Assembly and MIDA interest, while the GOC await the borders to open to meet the OlympiAfrica director who promised to support the project.
Ben Nunoo Mensah expressed that there is too much depending on football, while other disciplines who give the nation medals at international meets are neglected.
The GOC President thought the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games may be unfortunate but could turn up to be a blessing for some nations that prepare late like Ghana.
“We can use the next 10 or 12 months to invest in our elite athletes who are medal hopes, like our boxers, athletes and weight lifters” he expressed.
He added the “We need selfless people to lead sports, those who have joy when they help others”.
