Ghana has produced prominent boxers such as the first black African Olympic medallist Clement Quartey (pictured left), his younger brother Ike “Bazooka” Quartey, Ghana’s first professional boxing world champion David “DK” Kotey, Eddie Blay and Azumah Nelson to mention but a few.
For all their boxing prowess, did you know that Ghana has to date won only one medal in the World Championships? That’s way back in 1974 in the inaugural World Championships in Havana, Cuba when Amon Kotey settled for bronze in the light-welterweight berth.
On his to way to the semis, he beat Patricio Diaz of Argentina and Nigeria’s Obisia Nwankpa before losing to Bulgaria’s Vladimir Kolev in the last four.
Against this background, the World Championships remains the most competitive and prestigious boxing tournament on earth. Winning a medal here for most boxers has proved to be as difficult as squeezing water from a stone.
