Ghanaian Boxers advised to emulate Professor Azumah Nelson – GBA PRO
Communications Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Sammy Heywood Okine has advised Ghanaian boxers to copy the lifestyle of Professor Zoom Zoom Azumah Nelson if they want to reign for a long period.
He said Azumah Nelson should be an example for all African boxers who want to be famous and not just champions, but wish to enter the Boxing Hall of Fame.
According to the experienced sports journalist who doubles as the Communications Director of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) in charge of Social Media, the trend in boxing has changed and boxers must have managers who know the business of the game and skillful in negotiating for bouts.
He said managers and coaches have a role to play in molding boxers, but a lot depends on the boxers who must be self motivated and self disciplined.
He expressed that champion boxers need champion training as they are on the radar and focus of all contenders, media and boxing lovers.
Mr. Okine, the Public Relations Officer of the GBA said Azumah Nelson was able to rule the World Boxing Council (WBC) Featherweight and Super Featherweight classes because he was highly disciplined, smart and obeyed his trainers.
He hinted that Azumah Nelson loved to train and always trained hard to correct his mistakes and learnt new tricks in the sport, apart from being spiritual and religious.
He stressed that Azumah Nelson was loved by all Ghanaian that is why people did not sleep to watch his fights.
He added that Azumah Nelson was an icon and loved by the sports media which earned him the prestigious Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Sportsman of the Year seven times.
“I can boldly say Azumah Nelson, the Terrible Terror is the most distinguished Ghanaian Sports Personality” he expressed
He advised boxers to try their best to ignore temptations from family, friends and fans and concentrate on their mission to become great champions.
Sammy Heywood Okine pointed that Ghana currently has no world champion, but there are potential world beaters who can become champions in the near future.
He appealed to the media to report more on boxing and other sports, like they do for football to inspire and motivate the athletes.
