Ghana Boxing not on enough legs to move forward

Richard Commey lifted the flag of Ghana high once again after launching his 2x World Champion campaign last weekend in Las Vegas, USA against Dominican Jackson Marinez where he stopped him in the sixth round.

The victory was all over the place on the media where lots of fans across the country [Ghana] reacted happily via the various social media platforms indicating that, a lot were keenly interested to watch live.

It’s indeed sad that boxing in Ghana is not receiving the needed recognition it deserves. The few boxers who makes it at the world stage always wants to inspire the young ones who passionately love the sport and aspires to be like them.

In an interview with Top Rank together with his manager Michael Amoo-Bediako Snr (https://twitter.com/trboxing/status/1359919130246193152?s=19) before his fight with Jackson Marinez last weekend, it was so emotional when Richard Commey shed tears as he stated that he fights for his people [Ghana], and its indeed true for most of the Ghanaian boxers who stand in the ring representing their motherland, Ghana only for them to watch the highlights of those fights a day or two after.

The media must indeed up their games to bring some light in the boxing fraternity in this country in order to catch the attention of the  major stakeholders so that sponsorships which is so much in dire need in Ghana Boxing wouldn’t be a problem anymore.

In a tweet, Michael Amoo-Bediako Snr made known how he’s personally be working hard to promote this sport in Ghana
” I have been trying to raise the profile of Ghanaian boxing for years but my efforts keep falling on deaf ears so it’s no surprise there was limited coverage of Richard’s fight in Ghana, it’s such a shame but I will not give up!!!!!!”

I believe some promoters and coaches have in their own ways been doing great things to keep the sport alive despite facing tremendous challenges.

We are therefore calling on our able sports journalists to help promote Boxing with various platforms they have, big or small and I personally believe the young ones who wants to follow the likes of Azumah Nelson, David Kotey, Joshua Agbeko, Isaac Dogboe, etc. will be motivated to climb that ladder of greatness.

Let’s not be “Soccer Journalist” but “SPORTS JOURNALISTS”.
