Managers of Ghana’s lone world champion, Emmanuel “The Game boy” Tagoe are already looking ahead with their sights set on unifying the division after Tagoe defends his title against Fernando Saucedo in Accra.
Tagoe, 31, beat South African Mzonke Fana via unanimous decision to clinch the IBO world title on February 12, 2016, but has been left inactive following the late withdrawals of several of his intended opponents after the win which made him Ghana’s eighth world champion.
According to Gameboy’s promoters Box Office Sports Promotions, their main target for 2018 is to pull all the stops so that the 31-year-old brawler can annex either the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Authority (WBA) title before the end of 2018.
“That is our main agenda for 2018, we want to unify the division and as at now we are looking at adding the IBO title to either the WBO or WBA title before the end of the year,” the Chief Executive Officer [CEO] of Baby Jet Promotions, Samuel Anim Addo said in an interview on the sidelines of a Tagoe-Saucedo press conference.
“Saucedo is a tough boxer but Gameboy is training very hard and he is poised to make a defence of the belt. We are also looking at making a mandatory defence of the title this year but our main agenda is to unify the division”.
Mr Addo disclosed that this outfit was pulling all the stops to put-up a world class bout with over $200,000 spent on the event which will also witness musical performances from Afro-beats trio MzVee, Kidi and Kuami Eugene.
Mr. Anim Addo also announced that the undercard of the Tagoe-Saucedo bill titled: Defend to Glory includes a 10-round WBO Africa Welterweight Championship between Dodzi Kemeh and hard-hitting Tanzanian Mwinyi Mzengera, Daniel Lartey will engage Daniel Aduku over 12 rounds for the National Super Welterweight title Championship while Albert Mensah faces Charles Tetteh over eight rounds in the Welterweight contest.
The bill is completed by an eight-round Lightweight Contest between Michael Pappoe and Enoch Lamptey while Theophilus Tetteh will engage a yet to be named opponent in a six-round Super Bantamweight contest.
