In an exclusive convo with the Interim President of the Association, Mr. Sammy Heywood Okine, he disclosed among others why the need to form such an Association.
WHY THE FORMATION OF BWAG?
Thanks for the support and desire to know.
The formation of the Boxing Writers Association or Media to promote Ghana Boxing has been on the drawing board for a while. This union of boxing reporters should have been there long time ago, but it’s better late than never and we now have it.
Its not easy to do this but we are trying our best with the sports journalists who really love boxing.
There is no doubt and challenge that boxing is the strength of Ghana Sports and the number one sport, because boxing has given Ghana 10 real world champions and many Commonwealth and African champions. Maybe football is the passion but boxing is the strength “Hewale”.
THERE’S SPORTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF GHANA (SWAG), WHAT MAKES BWAG DIFFERENT?
SWAG is made up of sports writers, but the bulk majority are football people and at our Awards we look at football more than the other sports. For example, maybe out of 20 awards, 15 can go to football and the other sports share the 5.
Many boxers are doing well who must be recognized and if possible honored.
At the amateur level which needs more attention and support, look at the achievements, the Black Bombers always save Ghana on the medals table at big international games like the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games for a long time even the recent outings prove that boxing needs support.
We can not match the United States of America (USA) but if they are doing something right, we ought to do same, so our Association is just like the American one and we will just organize at our best levels with support from everyone who loves boxing.
Currently, boxing is the most attractive and attended event in Ghana, so we need to report as media and promote the game and industry.
WHEN WILL BWAG HAVE ITS SUBSTANTIVE EXECUTIVES?
We will soon have substantive officers but we want those who will be focused and work. Some of our members are outside Ghana and those who are prepared to work we are seeing, our membership is also growing steadily because we don’t just accept anyone.
WHO CAN BECOME A MEMBER OF BWAG AND WHAT DOES THE PERSON REQUIRE TO JOIN?
You must be reputable with knowledge in boxing and journalism.
HOW WILL GHANA BOXING BENEFIT FROM BWAG?
Ghana Boxing will benefit immensely, plenty and massively, because boxing needs the media, all the pay per view you hear about is media, boxing needs the television, radio, print, online and even social media.
FINAL REMARKS
BWAG is on social media, we are putting things together and I pray and hope my people who believe that Ghana and Africa deserves the best must make the vision and the mission reaches the destination.
We are a baby of SWAG, since most SWAG members do football most, also want to promote boxing.
We thank God, we must unite and love each other. We will come out with programmes like seminars and television shows featuring our boxers, coaches and fans. We appreciate Imax Media, Max TV and Max Radio for organizing the Professional Boxing League, other media houses like HSTV /ultimatesportsghana.com, boxinghana.com, African Boxing News, kbox, multimedia, Despite Media, KFMTV, Metro TV, GTV sports plus and others are doing a great job for boxing, we Salute them.
